TACOMA, Wash. - Forcing 22 turnovers and capitalizing on Pacific
mistakes, the Puget Sound Loggers collected a 71-67 victory of the
visiting Boxers in a Northwest Conference men's basketball game on
Friday night at Memorial Fieldhouse in Tacoma, Wash.
The two teams exchanged the lead a few times in the opening
minutes of the game as neither squad was able to take a firm
control of the contest. An 13-2 run by the Loggers in the
middle minutes put the maroon and white up by nine points with just
eight minutes to go in the first half and a 10-2 run in the closing
minutes of the half put Puget Sound up 37-25 at the half.
In the second half, the Loggers were able to keep the lead early
but Pacific slowly began to chip away, erasing an 11-points Logger
lead to tie the game with 10:19 left to go. Puget Sound was able to
get up by six but the Boxers kept punching and over the final five
minutes, the lead would never get about four points. While
Pacific continued to battle, the Loggers always seemed to have an
answer as they earned the hard-fought 71-67 victory.
The Loggers were led by 19 points from sophomore Nadav Heyman
(Corvallis, Ore.), who also added five assists and three steals.
Fellow sophomore Kaleb Shelton (Tacoma, Wash./Lincoln) added
15 points in the win. The Loggers bench chipped in, scoring 26
points on the game, compared with a shutout for the Pacific bench.
The Boxers were led by a game-high 23 points and 19 rebounds
from Ross Bartlet. A.J. Gaulton added 15 points in the game
while Carson Bartlett and Colin Western finished with 12 and 11
points respectively. Pacific held a slight edge in rebounds,
bringing down 39 boards, compared with 37 for the Loggers.
Puget Sound will close out the 2009-10 season on Saturday night
when they play host to Lewis & Clark. Prior to the 8 p.m.
tip, the Loggers will honor four seniors who will be playing their
final game in the maroon and white.
