CLACKAMAS, Ore. - Opening up the 2010 season, the Puget Sound
Logger softball team dropped their first two, falling to Concordia
(Ore.), 6-5, before losing to College of Idaho, 8-2, on Saturday at
the Northwest Cup in Clackamas, Ore.
In the first game, Concordia took the early lead on a two-run
home run in the top of the second buy the Loggers answered back in
the bottom of the frame, using a RBI single by Cassie Walny
(University Place, Wash./Curtis) to score Christina Demuelenaere
(Lake Stevens, Wash./Edmonds CC).
The Cavaliers added another run in the top of the fifth and
three more in the top of the sixth to put Concordia up 6-1 but the
Loggers exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth,
highlighted by a two-RBI double from sophomore Aryn Grause
(Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) that got Puget Sound back within
a run.
After holding CU scoreless in the top of the seventh, the
Loggers loaded the bases but a pair of quick outs denied the
comeback attempt as the Loggers fell, 6-5. Junior Auriel
Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) took the loss, allowing
three runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.
In the second game, the Coyotes of College of Idaho took an
early lead with four runs in the first two frames and the Loggers
couldn't find a way back in it. Sophomore Anthea Aasen
(Tacoma, Wash./Wilson) homered to center in the top of the fourth
to put the Loggers on the board but four more 'Yote runs in the
bottom of the fifth put C of I up 8-1.
Aasen picked up another RBI in the sixth, scoring Brianna Huber
(Chico, Calif.) from second as the Loggers fell in the second game,
8-2. Grause took the loss in game two, allowing four runs,
three of them earned, on seven hits in three innings pitched.
The Loggers will play two more on Sunday as they take on Oregon
Tech and British Columbia to conclude action at the NW Cup.
