TACOMA, Wash. – In a physical NCAA Division III
women's lacrosse matchup between the Puget Sound Loggers and
the visiting Birmingham-Southern Panthers, the Loggers used a
consistent offensive attack to pull out an 11-6 victory Sunday in
Baker Stadium.
Puget Sound opened up a 6-2 halftime lead after goals were
scored by five different players. Junior midfielder Sofia Lama
(Laguna Niguel, Calif.) led the team in the period with two goals
and an assist, and would finish the day with four goals.
To begin the second half the Panthers looked like a completely
different team, scoring three goals in less than two minutes before
five minutes had even ticked off the clock. The Loggers responded
quickly, running off four goals of their own to rebuild a
comfortable 10-5 lead that they used to coast through the last 16
minutes of play.
Birmingham Southern and Puget Sound exchanged one score each
through the final portion of the game as the defense really
tightened up. There were four yellow cards in the last 13 minutes
of play, with the Loggers committing three and the Panthers getting
the final one with less than a minute to go.
Six different players scored each goal for Birmingham Southern,
while the Loggers had six as well. Sophomore attacker Kristine
Morris (Tiburon, Calif./University) had three goals on the day for
Puget Sound.
The Loggers head to southern California during spring break to
clash with four different SCIAC opponents, beginning at Occidental
on March 18 at 7 pm.
