ORANGE, Calif. - After shutting down the bats of Suffolk en
route to a 3-2 victory, the Puget Sound Loggers couldn't complete
the comeback against Chapman, falling 7-3, to earn a split on
Tuesday at the Sun West Tournament in Orange, Calif.
In the first game, the Loggers got on the board first as
freshman Briana Huber (Chico, Calif.) took advantage of her first
collegiate at-bat in her home state, hitting a sacrifice fly to
score Carolyn Moore (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names). The Rams of
Suffolk took the lead in the bottom of the third on a two-run home
run as the Loggers were forced to play from behind.
In the top of the fifth, the Loggers finally took care of
business as Moore tripled down the right field line to score Katy
Appleby (Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) and then Megan Janes
(Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to
score Moore as the Loggers earned the 3-2 win.
Junior Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) earned
the win and the complete game, striking out 11 and allowing just
one earned run in seven innings pitched.
In the second game, the host Panthers jumped all over the
Loggers, putting up seven runs in their first three at-bats.
In the bottom of the third, the maroon and white finally
forced a run across as Anthea Aasen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson) singled
to right center to score Moore.
Puget Sound added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth as
Christina Demuelenaere (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) singled
up the middle to score Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent
Valley) and then Appleby singled up the middle to score Huber but
the Loggers left the bases full as Chapman ended the rally to pick
up the 7-3 win.
Bijou Felder (Berkeley, Calif./St. Mary's) pitched well in
relief, throwing three and two-thirds innings of scoreless ball,
allowing just two hits in 14 batters faced.
The Loggers will head back to Hart Park on Wednesday to take on
Kenyon at 10:00 am and Vanguard at 2:00 pm.
