ORANGE, Calif. - Limited to just six hits on the day, the Puget
Sound Loggers dropped a pair of games at the Sun West Tournament in
Orange, Calif., falling to Hastings, 2-1, before losing 10-1 to Cal
State San Marcos on Thursday at Hart Park in Orange, Calif.
In the first game, the Broncos struck first with a lead-off home
run and another tally off a Logger error as Hastings took the early
2-0 lead and never looked back as neither team allowed a run the
rest of the way. The game turned into a pitchers' dual as
Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham-Kapowsin) went six innings,
allowing just five hits and striking out three. Senior
Chelsey Woodside starred for the Broncos, striking out 11 and
allowing just three hits but walking five to earn the complete game
shutout.
In the second game of the day, the CSUSM Cougars struck right
off the bat, scoring two runs on four hits in the top of the first
and Brenna Sandberg shut down the Loggers in the circle.
After the Cougars added four more runs in the top of the
second, the Loggers got a run across when Megan Janes (Littleton,
Colo./Arapahoe) was hit by a pitch with bases loaded to score
Christina Demuelenaere (Lake Stevens, Wash./Shoreline CC) from
third.
CSUSM added two more runs in the sixth and a pair in the seventh
as they collected the big 10-1 win. Sperberg pitched well for
the Loggers in relief, striking out five in five and one-third
innings pitched. Sandberg earned the win for the Cougars,
striking out 14 but walking seven to earn the win.
The Loggers will wrap up play at the Sun West Tournament on
Friday, taking on St. Mary's (Minn.) at Noon, followed by La Sierra
