LOS ANGELES - The first-year Occidental Tigers tried to post a
second half come-back but the more experienced Puget Sound Loggers
shut to door, winning the NCAA Division III women's lacrosse match,
17-13, on Thursday night in Los Angeles, Calif.
The Loggers (4-1) took the lead just 40 seconds into the contest
as freshman Julia Schulman (Durham, N.C./Durham Academy) converted
on a free position shot for the 1-0 lead. Junior Sofia Lama
(Laguna Niguel, Calif./Torrey Pines) scored her first just over a
minute later for the 2-0 lead.
Occidental got their first scored with 23:17 left in the first
period but the Loggers answered back with three straight as they
used their experience to take an 8-3 lead into the halftime break.
Puget Sound held a 23-18 edge in shots in the first half as
Occidental got physical, being called for 19 first half violations.
In the second half, Lama scored early to give the Loggers a 9-3
lead but the Tigers scored three straight to get back within three,
9-6. Oxy would eventually get within two but that would be as
close as they would get as the Loggers finished the game on a 4-2
scoring run to collect the 17-13 victory.
The Loggers were led offensively by six goals from Schulman, who
also added an assist. Lama finished the night with five goals
while Anna Gunderson (Bloomington, Minn./John F. Kennedy) added
three goals. Katie Schlesinger (Lake Oswego, Ore./Lakeridge),
Jessica McDonald (Portland, Ore./Lincoln) and Kristine Morris
(Tiburon, Calif./University) each added one. Junior keeper
Ana Calciano (Farmington, Conn./Miss Porter's School) made 14 saves
to collect the victory.
Occidental was led by five goals from Shannon Docherty.
Darah Kessler and Isabel Osgood-Roach each added three goals.
Lauren Wemple added two goals in the losing effort.
Charla Holden took the loss, allowing 17 goals and making
just four saves in 60 minutes in net.
The Loggers will be back in action on Friday night when they
head to Claremont, Calif. to take on Pomona-Pitzer.
