McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Taking on the 16th-ranked team in the
nation, the Puget Sound Loggers couldn't muster enough offense to
upset the Linfield Wildcats, falling 7-2 and 12-0 in a Northwest
Conference softball doubleheader on Sunday in McMinnville, Ore.
After a scoreless first inning, the 'Cats struck first with
three runs in the bottom of the second to take the initial lead.
After one more Linfield run in the third and two more in the
fourth, the Loggers finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the
fifth when Erika Hayes (Edmonds, Wash./Edmonds-Woodway) singled
down the right field line to score Briana Huber (Chico, Calif.).
Linfield picked up another run in the fifth to pull ahead by six
runs, 7-1, but the Loggers got the final run as Katy Appleby
(Westminster, Colo./Standley Lake) scored following a Linfield
error that allowed Carolyn Moore (Seattle, Wash./Holy Names) to
reach base.
In the nightcap, the nationally-ranked Wildcats blew the game
open right away, putting nine runs on the board in the bottom of
the fourth and the Loggers just couldn't get the offense to
produce. Linfield added two more in the third and one more in
the fourth as the 'Cats invoked the eight-run rule to take the 12-0
victory in five innings.
Sophomore Megan Janes (Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) was the only
Logger with multiple hits on the day, going two-for-seven in the
doubleheader.
The Loggers will head to Spokane this weekend for four-games at
Whitworth University. The NWC series is set to begin at Noon
on Friday.
