TACOMA, Wash.- Facing the 19th-ranked Linfield Wildcats in a
Northwest Conference softball doubleheader, the Puget Sound Loggers
kept the series opener close in a defensive bout and survived seven
innings en route to a 7-0 loss while the second game yielded less
favorable results as Puget Sound dropped the nightcap 11-1 in five
innings.
In the first game, the Wildcats didn't get on the board until
the third inning, but they used a steady barrage of runs to bolster
their lead through the rest of the game. The Loggers were hitless
and scoreless through six innings, but a hit by
Megan Janes
(Littleton, Colo./Arapahoe) in the bottom of the seventh ruined a
perfect game by Linfield pitcher Lauren Harvey.
Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham Kapowsin) took the
loss for the Loggers, while Harvey remained the top pitcher in the
Northwest Conference.
In the second game, Linfield came out looking to put things
away quickly. The Wildcats scored three runs in the opening inning
and added more and more every inning for the rest of the way.
Linfield lefty pitcher Claire Velasky allowed the Loggers only four
hits and one run on the day, and Puget Sound had no answer for the
Wildcat bats.
Brianna Huber (Chico, Calif./Chico) had two hits on the day
for the Loggers, who struggled to get much done on the scoreboard
for the second straight game.
The Loggers continue their homestand with a double-header next
Saturday against Lewis and Clark and then close the weekend with a
twinbill against George Fox. Gametime is set for noon and 2 p.m.
both days.
