TACOMA, Wash. – A day after earning a sweep over Lewis and
Clark, the Puget Sound Loggers dispatched the George Fox Bruins 7-6
in the series opener and 8-5 in the nightcap to sweep a Northwest
Conference softball doubleheader and create a four game win-streak
going in to next week's matchup against crosstown rival
Pacific Lutheran.
Puget Sound got down in a 6-3 hole against the Bruins going in
to the fifth inning of the first game before staging a slow
comeback to pull out the win in the bottom of the seventh.
Sophomore Anthea Aasen (Tacoma, Wash./Wilson) got on base on an
error to open the inning and junior Bijou Felder (Berekely,
Calif./St/ Mary's) was inserted as a pinch runner. Felder
advanced to second on an illegal pitch and then to third on a wild
pitch, and after Christina Demuelenaere (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake
Stevens) walked, freshman Brianna Huber (Chico, Calif./Chico) came
up the plate and hit a walk-off single down the left field
line. Felder scored the winning run in her only action of the
day.
Sophomore Aryn Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) got the
win for Puget Sound after starter Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway,
Wash./Graham Kapowsin) left the game due to injury. Grause was 2-3
on the day at the plate with two RBI's, while Aasen hit a
three run home run in the third.
Bethany Chriss and Shelby Briske each had home runs for George
Fox, picking up three and two RBI's, respectively.
In the second game, George Fox jumped out to an early lead once
again but saw it disappear for good by the end of the third inning.
Puget Sound led 6-4 after three and cushioned the advantage with
two runs in the sixth to grab the 8-5 win.
Errors plagued the Loggers during the second part of the
twinbill, as only two of five Bruin runs were earned. Puget Sound
committed four errors during the day to only one by George Fox.
Grause picked up the victory for the Loggers and had a single
and a double with an RBI in three plate appearances to add to her
solid performance for the day. Sperberg would come back in to close
the game, and got two strikeouts in three batters to end the game.
Huber had a three run homer for Puget Sound, while junior Alex
Usher (Carson, Wash./Stevenson) had a solo shot of her own as the
Loggers picked up 11 hits in the contest.
Shelby Klein had a double for an RBI for the Bruins, while Becka
Doyle led George Fox with two hits on the day.
The Loggers close the season out next week with a Saturday home
double-header against Pacific Lutheran and another double-header on
Sunday in Parkland, Wash. against the same Lutes. The first pitch
is set to be thrown both days at noon and 2 p.m.
