TACOMA, Wash. – On senior day at Logger Softball Field,
the Puget Sound Loggers and Pacific Lutheran Lutes split a
Northwest Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at
Logger Softball Field in Tacoma, Wash.
After the Loggers opened up a 3-0 advantage in the third inning
of the first game, the Lutes came storming back with nine runs in
the top of the fourth to earn an eventual 11-4 victory. Katie
Hanten and Stacey Hagensen led PLU offensively with three hits
each, including a three-run home run for Hagensen in the fourth.
Hagensen also had five strikeouts and gave up only five hits in a
solid day in the pitching circle.
Puget Sound was lead by the strong play of junior Christina
Demuelenaere (Lake Stevens, Wash.) who had two hits in three at
bats for an RBI. Junior Alex Usher (Carson, Wash./Stevenson) also
had an RBI on a hit, as did sophomore Anthea Aasen (Tacoma,
Wash./Wilson).
In the second game, Puget Sound slowly built a 6-0 lead going in
to the fourth, but PLU wouldn't go quietly in to the night as
they rallied and tied the game up at 6-6 with three runs in the top
of the seventh.
With runners on second and third and no outs, sophomore Aryn
Grause (Corvallis, Ore./Crescent Valley) ended a strong day
on the mound as junior Auriel Sperberg (Spanaway, Wash./Graham
Kapowsin) came in to close the inning.
The Loggers gave up three runs but got out of the top of the
inning tied and quickly loaded the bases and ended the game in the
bottom on a Grause walk, a hit by Demuelenaere and freshman Brianna
Huber (Chico, Calif./Chico) and a walk-off hit up the middle by
Usher, ending the nightcap victorious by a score of 7-6.
Sperberg collected the win for the Loggers, giving her a record
of 7-14 on the season. Demuelenaere and Grause both had two hits in
three plate appearances, and junior Carolyn Moore (Seattle,
Wash./Holy Names) had two hits and two RBI's. The Loggers
played very well offensively, getting 10 hits as a team.
Puget Sound closes the season out tomorrow on PLU's home
diamond. The first pitch is set to be thrown at noon in the opener
and 2 p.m. in final game of 2010.
