Box Score 2 TACOMA, Wash. – It was quite a day for junior Aryn Grause, who hit two homers and picked up both wins in the circle as the University of Puget Sound softball team swept Lewis & Clark 7-5 and 5-4.
Grause picked up the win in both games in relief and hit two homers, including a walkoff home run to right field to give the Loggers the sweep.
Game 1 – W, 7-5
The early game was a game of hot-and-cold as all 12 runs were scored in the first three frames. However, the Loggers (6-14, 4-6 NWC) edged the Pioneers (2-14, 0-10 NWC) for the 7-5 win.
Grause's first homer gave the Loggers an immediate 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Pios matched the output in the second when Molly Donahue's groundout to second brought in a run.
In the second, Alex Usher singled down the first base line to score Anthea Aasen from second. Three batters later Elayna Van Hess smashed a three-run homer to left field to open the lead to 5-1 in favor of the Loggers.
Michaela Satter brought the Pios all the way back with one swing when she smashed a grand slam over the left field fence to tie the game back up at 5-5 in the top of the third.
Grause took over in relief in the circle shortly after the slam, and all but shut down the Pio offense. She tossed 4.1 innings and allowed just one hit while striking out six to hold on to a slim Logger lead. She earned the win as she entered with the game tied at 5-5 in the third. No Pio advanced passed second base while Grause was in the circle.
In the bottom of the third, Chrissy Atterson quickly cashed in Grause after Grause led off the inning with a double for a 6-5 lead. Tahni Andht, who was pinch running for Atterson, later came around to score the insurance run on a Joleen Monfiletto single.
After the third, Grause and Natalie Rose took over the game in the circle as they held both offense quiet the rest of the way.
Game 2 – W, 5-4
Grause stayed hot in the second game and lifted the Loggers to their first doubleheader sweep of the season with a walkoff homer to right field in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Grause smashed her second homer of the day over the wall in right center to lead the Loggers to victory but also give herself a win in the circle. On the day, Grause was 3-for-4 with three walks, four runs scored and two RBI.
In the circle, Grause pitched the final 1.2 innings of the game and earned the win. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the sixth, Grause took the ball in relief and induced a strikeout and a foul out to end the inning unscathed and keep the game tied at 2-2.
In the sixth, the Loggers tallied four consecutive singles from Jenica Holt, Van Hess, Megan Janes and Carolyn Moore to plate two runs and take a 4-2. Caroline DeVincezi extended the game for the Pios in the top of the seventh with a two-out homer over the left field fence, tying the game at 4-4.
However, that set the stage for Grause's walkoff shot in the bottom half.
In the top of the second, Rose homered to give the Pios an early 2-0 lead. However, Monfiletto cut the lead to 2-1 with an RBI-groundout in the second and Holt tied up the game with an RBI-single in the fourth.
The Loggers travel down to Salem, Ore. for a weekend, four-game series with Willamette starting tomorrow at 2 p.m.
