Loggers Drop Two To Whitworth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – The bats came to life late in the day, but it wasn't quite enough as the University of Puget Sound softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Whitworth. The Loggers (0-8, 0-4 NWC) fell behind quickly in both games as the Pirates (6-10, 4-4 NWC) completed the four-game sweep.

Game 1 – L, 2-6

The Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second to take the initial lead.  After leading off the inning on a single, Jamie Brunner eventually scored on a wild pitch. With two on and two outs, a Logger error allowed a pair of runs to score as the Loggers went in a 3-0 hole.

Whitworth added one more in the third on a homer from Heather Heasselgesser, but the Loggers got two back in the bottom of the third. Christina Demuelenaere led off with a single and Jenica Holt followed her with a double to right center. Chrissy Atterson cashed in both runners with a double to left as the Loggers cut the lead in half.

However, Emily Anderson held the Loggers at bay with eight stikeouts as she did not allow another run and earned her third victory of the weekend. The Pirates added two insurance runs in the fifth and held off the Loggers the rest of the way.

Game 2 – L, 6-10

Whitworth wasted no time in taking another lead in the night cap with a three-run first. Julia Johnson highlighted the rally with a two-run homer to left center. The Pirates added three more in the fourth for a 6-0 lead. The Pirates had the bases loaded and scored on a slow roller from Hanna Boyd for the first run of the inning. With the bases still loaded, Kelsey Burgi knocked in two more with a base hit up the middle.

The Logger bats woke up in the bottom of the inning as Demuelenaere and Alex Usher stroked back-to-back RBI singles to put the Loggers on the board.  Later in the inning, Megan Janes came up with a two-out, RBI-single to cut the lead to 6-3.

The Pirates hung up another run in the fifth and three more in the top of the seventh for a comfortable 10-3 lead. Brittany Wisner had a sac fly in the inning and Kelsey Ayers stroke a two-RBI double to pad the Pirates lead.

In the seventh, the Loggers refused to go quietly as they loaded the bases with one out. Aryn Grause drew a walk to bring in one run and Jenica Holt scored a couple pitches later on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 10-5. Demuelenaere came through with her second RBI-hit of the game as she singled into left to plate Atterson.

Emily Anderson then shut the door with back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Jessica Dickson earned the win but was credited with all six Logger runs. Joleen Monfiletto took the loss as she tossed three innings and allowed three runs.

The Loggers will host George Fox on Friday at 1 p.m. in a makeup doubleheader of last week's "snowouts."
