Loggers Sweep By George Fox

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NEWBERG, Ore. – The University of Puget Sound softball team picked up a pair of wins on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep of George Fox. Auriel Sperberg picked up a win and a save as the Loggers (11-22, 9-14 NWC) earned 5-3 and 5-1 wins.

Game 1 – W, 5-3

After a scoreless first frame, Joleen Monfiletto broke the Loggers offensive silence with a two-run homer to left center. The Loggers would not let go of the initial 2-0 lead although they needed a bit more offense to secure the victory.

Jennifer Davis earned the win in the circle for the Loggers, improving to 3-5 on the year. She tossed five innings while scattering six hits and allowing two runs to score. She struck out seven batters en route to the win.

Kerianne Davidson cut the Logger lead in half when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the Bruins half of the third. However, Davis induced an inning-ending ground ball on the next batter to escape the jam.

In the sixth, the Loggers struck again for three insurance runs. Brianna Huber doubled to left center to plate Elayna Van Hess and Megan Janes doubled in the very next at bat to bring in Huber and Monfiletto for a 5-1 Logger lead.

The insurance proved to be crucial as the Bruins struck for two more runs in the sixth. Sperberg entered in the bottom of the sixth to stop the rally and tossd a perfect seventh to earn her first save of the season.

Game 2 – W, 5-1

In the second game, Sperberg continued to dominate in the circle for the complete game victory. Sperberg scattered five hits and allowed just one run while fanning four and issuing no walks.

The Loggers broke through in the top of the second once again when Aryn Grause scored on an error. With Sperberg's performance in the circle that would have been enough but Grause and the Loggers weren't done.

Grause singled in Carolyn Moore in the fifth and Alex Usher singled in Christina Demuelenaere in the next at-bat for a 3-0 Logger lead.

Grause and Usher also collected back-to-back RBIs in the seventh inning to boost the Logger lead to 5-0. Davidson hit a solo homer in the bottom half to help the Bruins avoid the shutout in the nightcap.

However, Sperberg got back on track and retired the next two batters in order to secure the Loggers victory.

The Loggers will return home for a single game on Tuesday against No. 1 Linfield. Next week, the Loggers will travel across town for a doubleheader with Pacific Lutheran before hosting the Lutes for Senior Day on Sunday.
