TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound softball team was swept 5-1, 14-10 in its 2012 season-opener against Pacific. The season-opening series featured a pitcher's duel and a slugfest but Pacific (4-6, 2-0 NWC) came away with a pair of wins in the end.

Game 1 – L, 1-5

The two teams combined for just eight hits in the first game as Aryn Grause for the Loggers (0-2, 0-2 NWC) and Chelsey Chamberlain for the boxers went toe-to-toe for seven innings.

Grause allowed five runs (two earned) on five hits and struck out six in the complete game loss. Chamberlain allowed just three hits and one unearned run while fanning 11 Loggers for a complete game win.

Pacific collected their first run in the opening frame as Lauren Tuey knocked in Becca Moen. Jenna Stevens two-RBI single in the second pushed the lead to 3-0. She collected her third RBI in the fourth for the Boxers final run. They also scored on a Logger error earlier in the inning.

Amy Schmeckpepper drove in the Loggers lone run in the game in the bottom of the fourth. Playing in her first game as a Logger, Schmeckpepper's sac fly to center brought home Grause to cut the lead to 5-1.

The score would freeze there as both pitchers tossed three scoreless frames to end the game.

Game 2 – L, 10-14

The nightcap was a much different story as both offenses erupted in spurts. The Loggers quickly built a lead with a three-spot in the first. Chrissy Atterson drove in a run on a sac fly and Marissa Jeffers knocked in two more with a single into right center.

The Boxers erupted right back with five runs in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of three Logger errors in the inning. A two-RBI single from Jenica Holt in the bottom half tied the game at 2-2.

Over the next three innings, the pitchers took control, keeping both teams off the board. However, the bats came back to life in the sixth and seventh as the Boxers scored nine runs and the Loggers challenged with five of their own.

Chelsey Chamberlain reopened the scoring when her double to left center drove in two Boxers to reclaim the lead. Tuey went over the wall in the next at-bat for a 9-5 Boxer lead. She finished the game 2-for-5 with four RBI.

With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Loggers managed to tie things up again. Jeffers, Schmeckpepper and Joleen Monfiletto smack consecutive RBI-hits to tie it up at 9-9.

Pacific went back to work in the seventh, pushing five more runs on the board.This time Jenna Stevens and Tuey came up with the big two-RBI hits to key the rally. Atterson drove in one in the bottom half before Chloe Henson put the last out in he books and sealed the win for the visitors.

The Loggers head back out to Logger Field tomorrow to host Lewis & Clark.
