Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Wash. – A few big innings propelled Whitworth past the Puget Sound softball team on Saturday. The Loggers (2-16, 2-10 NWC) were swept in Spokane 6-3 and 12-7. Chrissy Atterson had five RBI in the second game.
Game 1 – L, 3-6
Jenica Holt led off the game with a double and came around to score on an Aryn Grause single to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead. However, Jamie Brunner double in a run for the Pirates (6-14, 4-10 NWC) in the bottom half of the inning to knot up the score at 1-1.
Both Joleen Monfiletto for the Loggers and Taylor Gilbert for the Pirates breezed through the next three innings, controlling the game from the circle. As both pitchers hung up zeroes on the scoreboard, the game moved into its final frames.
Finally, Whitworth broke through in the fifth with four runs. A pair of Logger errors brought home the first two runs and back-to-back RBI hits brought in two more runs for a 5-1 Pirate lead. They scored another in the sixth to further pad the lead.
The Loggers rallied in the seventh as Monfiletto and Megan Janes each drove in a run, but the Loggers couldn't erase the deficit as they fell in the first of two for the day.
Game 2 – L, 7-12
Chrissy Atterson drove in five runs in the nightcap but a seven-run first inning proved too much to overcome as the Loggers fell 12-7.
Atterson once again gave the Loggers an early lead when her double drove in Holt, who again led off the game with a double of her own. Whitworth came roaring back, scoring seven runs on four hits and drawing three walks. Heather Hesselgesser delivered the big blow with a bases-loaded double that drove in all three runs.
The Loggers tried to chip away at the lead as Elayna Van Hess scored on an illegal pitch in the second and Briana Huber came around to score on an error in the third, making the score 7-3. Whitworth put up one more in the bottom of the third to pad the lead to 8-3.
Atterson collected her next two RBI in the fifth with a single to right that drove in two runs. She also hit a two-run homer in the seventh but it wasn't quite enough to bring the Loggers back.
A Hesselgesser double and a two-RBI triple from Jessica Ross sparked another four run rally in the sixth to help put the game out of reach.
The Loggers and Whitworth will face off again tomorrow in another NWC doubleheader.
