Box Score 2 SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth capitalized late in both games to complete a four-game sweep of the Puget Sound softball team. The Loggers (2-18, 2-12 NWC) led 9-6 in the first game behind a grand slam from Brianna Huber but fell as the Pirates (8-14, 6-10 NWC) completed a dramatic comeback.
Game 1 – L, 9-10
Whitworth climbed on top early with three runs in the first. Joleen Monfiletto's homer in the top of the second cut the lead down to 3-2. Sami Parr drove in another Whitworth run in the second and another came around to score in the third on a Logger error for a 5-2 Pirate lead.
Elayna Van Hess drove in a Logger run in the top of the fourth but Parr's sacrifice fly in the bottom half kept a three-run advantage for the Pirates.
The Loggers exploded for five runs in the fifth to take an 8-6 lead. Amy Schmeckpepper smacked a solo homer to open the rally. After the Loggers loaded the bases on the next three batters, Briana Huber stepped to the plate and promptly hit a grand slam to gain an instant 8-6 advantage for the Loggers. The Loggers added one more in the sixth when Jenica Holt scored on a wild pitch.
The three-run advantage wasn't quite enough as the Pirates rallied for four runs in the seventh to come away with the win. Jessica Ross drove in three runs with a home run with one out in the inning that tied the game at 9-9. Van Hess came in to pitch and retired the first batter she saw.
Van Hess appeared to be out of the inning but a Logger error allowed Ashlyn Mundo to reach safely. As Mundo dug for third on the error, another Logger error on the relay allowed Mundo to come all the way around to score for the Pirate win.
Game 2 – L, 2-7
Whitworth rode the momentum of their dramatic win in the early game to build a 7-0 lead in the late game. Whitworth scored one in the third and one in the fourth to take the 2-0 lead.
A five-run fifth for the Pirates opened up the game to a comfortable 7-0 lead. Jamie Brunner's three-run homer in the inning highlighted the rally.
The Loggers finally broke through in the sixth when Chrissy Atterson homered and added one more in the seventh when Megan Janes' sac fly brought in Van Hess.
The Pirates were able to end the rally there and come away with the sweep.
The Loggers are off next week but return home to host Linfield on Mar. 31 at noon.
