Box Score 2 SALEM, Ore. – The Puget Sound softball team was swept in Sunday's makeup doubleheader at Willamette. Elayna Van Hess pitched well in the first game but took a tough 2-0 loss before Willamette recorded a 10-2 run-rule win in the late game.
The doubleheader was a makeup date from the rainout between the two teams on Mar. 11.
Game 1 – L, 0-2
Van Hess was solid in the circle but took a tough luck loss. She went six innings and struck out five while also issuing four walks. The Bearcats (13-8, 12-4 NWC) touched Van Hess for just five hits but brought two runs across the plate to secure the win.
Alex Watilo was the equal to the task for Willamette as she held the Loggers (2-20, 2-14 NWC) to just four hits while striking out eight.
Willamette cashed in its first run on a groundout from Heather Winslow in the first inning. Mica Romero's single in the fifth cashed in the Bearcats other run.
Briana Huber posed the Loggers biggest hit of the day as she doubled with one out in the fourth but was stranded on second,
Game 2- L, 2-10 (5 inns.)
Huber was 2-for-2 in the game and cashed in both Logger runs but it wasn't enough to keep up with the offensive output of the Bearcats. Huber's single in the first scored Amy Schmeckpepper to give the Loggers a 1-0 lead
Heather Winslow knocked a two-run homer in the bottom half of the inning to give the Bearcats the lead that they would hold the rest of the way. The Bearcats manufactured three more runs in the third and Huber led off the fourth with a solo home run for the Loggers other run.
Willamette answered back with another run in the fourth and scored four more in the fifth to seal the run-rule win.
The Loggers are back home next week after nearly a month to host Linfield on Saturday at noon. They will also look to a rematch with Willamette on Sunday at noon.
