Atterson's Homer Not Enough As Bruins Complete Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound softball team fell twice more on Sunday as George Fox took the sweep 7-3 and 11-2. Chrissy Atterson helped the Loggers (2-6, 2-6 NWC) build an early lead with a two-run homer but it wasn't enough to fend off the Bruins (10-8, 5-3 NWC).

Game 1 – L, 7-3

The Loggers built a 3-0 lead over the first two innings but saw it disappear as the Bruins scored five in the fifth to key the victory. Atterson put the Loggers on the board first with a two-run homer that just cleared the left field and brought in Brianna Huber.

Both Huber and Atterson finished the game 2-for-4 while Elayna Van Hess and Amy Schmeckpepper each went 2-for-3.

Schmeckpepper led off the second with a single and later scored on a groundout from Megan Janes. After that, the Bruins took momentum. Bethany Chriss smacked a two-run homer for the Bruins in the third to spark the rally.

The Bruin pitching staff went to work and kept the Loggers off the board the rest of the way. Rachel Fielder tossed 3.2 innings in relief to pick up the win while Erin Hento tossed the final 2.2 innings to get the save.

The Bruins took the lead in the fifth with five runs coming across the plate. McKenzie Beeson and Kerianne Davidson each delivered two-RBI singles to fuel the rally.

Joleen Monfiletto kept the Bruins from scoring in the final two frames but the Logger offense as also held scoreless as the Bruins took the win.

Game 2 – L, 11-2

The Bruins held tight to the momentum built from their come-from-behind win in the first game as they opened up the game with two run in the first frame. Beeson and Felicia Chavez each came through with RBI singles.

The Loggers tied things up in the second when Megan Janes double brought in Schmeckpepper and Jenica Holt's single plated Monfiletto.

However, the Bruins came through with another big inning in the third, plating five runs to build a 7-2 lead. The Bruins racked up five runs on six hits in the inning before Monfiletto came in relief to close the door on the rally.

After a scoreless fourth, the Bruins hung up four more runs in the fifth to clinch the run-rule win. Chavez was a part of both rallies as she went 4-for-4 in the game with three RBI to lead the Bruins. Taylor Whitmore picked up the win in the circle while Aryn Grause took the loss.

The Loggers start a 14-game road trip next week with a Saturday doubleheader at defending national champion and top-ranked Linfield.
