Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – The Puget Sound softball team was able to fit in one game on a rainy Sunday but fell 10-0 to visiting Willamette. The Bearcats (14-8, 13-4 NWC) scored six runs in the fifth to earn the run-rule win.
Elayna Van Hess and Alex Watilo traded shutout innings in the two opening frames with neither allowing a hit. The Bearcats finally broke through in the third with three runs. The first two runs came across on a wild pitch and passed ball for the Bearcats. A third run came across before the Loggers were able to cut down a fourth Bearcat trying to score at the plate.
Joleen Monfiletto led off the bottom of the third with a single but was retired at second on a fielders choice before the Loggers could cash in. A Willameete double put across another run in the fourth for a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Loggers committed back-to-back errors to open the inning and the Bearcats capitalized with six run coming across the plate. Susie Krewer brought in three with a triple that dropped just inside the right field line.
The Loggers threatened in the fifth as Van Hess walked to lead off the inning and Jenica Holt singled with two outs. Both advanced on a wild pitch but Watilo shut the door on the rally to conserve the run-rule win.
The Loggers are scheduled to play Linfield tomorrow at 3 p.m.
