Loggers Fall In Final Games Of 2013

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash. – The 2013 softball season came to a close on Tuesday with Pacific sweeping a doubleheader from the Puget Sound softball team, 4-0 and 13-5. With the two wins, Pacific claimed the four-seed in the NWC Tournament this weekend.

Game 1 – L, 0-4

Both teams seemed to generate multiple threats on the basepaths, but neither were able to capitalize in the early innings. The Boxers left seven runners aboard and the Loggers stranded eight.

Megan Campbell found herself in tough spots with the bases loaded and one out in the second and two on with one out in the third, but managed to wiggle out of the threats unscathed. A strikeout and a grounder to short ended the threat in the second while a flyout and another K ended the threat in the third.

In the fourth, the Boxers picked up one run on an error and then took a 3-0 lead after a Jenn Yano homer in the fifth.

After going down in order in the second, the Loggers put at least one runner on base in each of the final five frames but none advanced past third. Shannon Reed stroked a two-out single in the fourth and reached third on a double from Brianna Huber but both were stranded there. Reed was the only runner to reach third in the game.

Marissa Reichard also wiggled her way out of jams late in the game as the Loggers had runners on first and second in the sixth and seventh innings. She ended both threats with a fly ball to come away with the complete game win.

Game 2 – L, 5-13 (5 inns.)

The Boxers got rolling early in the first game en route to the run-rule victory. A pair of Boxer homers from Reichard and Ashley Mitchell put the Boxers up 5-0 before the Loggers had a chance to come to the plate.

The Loggers got one back in the bottom half when Taylor Jones singled with two outs and scored moments later on a Marissa Jeffers double.

In the second, the Boxers put up six more runs on five hits and a Logger error to go up 11-0 and the Loggers were never able to recover.

They did slice into the lead in the second with a trio of runs crossing the plate. Reed scored on a double steal attempt with Huber that resulted in a throw from the catcher sailing into center field. Chelsea Lindroth then singled in Huber and scored on another Boxer error later in the inning.

Back-to-back doubles scored the Boxers' final two runs in the third and Amy Schmeckpeper responded for the Loggers with an RBI-single in the bottom half.

The loss concluded the Loggers season – its first under head coach Kellyn Tate.
