Loggers' Have Big First But Fall Twice To Lutes

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PARKLAND, Wash. – A quick start didn't hold up in the first game as Pacific Lutheran took both games of a doubleheader on Tuesday, 9-4 and 15-0. Jenica Holt and Marissa Jeffers each had three hits on the day.

Game 1 – L, 4-9

Amy Schmeckpeper doubled to open the game and the Loggers (0-29, 0-18 NWC) started on a roll. The visitors took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first and led as late as the fifth before the Lutes (19-11, 11-7 NWC) scored eight late runs to take the win.

A single from Holt in the first put two on with none out. Schmeckpeper came around to score on a throwing error before Lisa Colombo singled in Brianna Huber for a 2-0 Logger lead. Marissa Jeffers later singled in to right center to plate two more Logger runs.

The Lutes got one back in the bottom half but the next three frames belonged to the pitchers. Megan Campbell allowed just one run on four hits through the first four innings for the Loggers. However, Leah Butters was up for the challenge as she held the Loggers scoreless over the final 6.2 innings.

Six hits led to six Lute runs in the fifth inning as they overcame the 4-1 deficit and took the lead for the first time in the game. Five different Lutes had an RBI single in the inning.

The hosts scored twice more in the sixth and the Loggers went down in order in the seventh as the Lutes captured the comeback win.

Game 2 – L, 0-15 (5 inns.)

The momentum from the comeback win in game one carried over into the day's second game as the Lutes captured a 15-0 win in five innings. Alicia Davis had a home run and five RBIs to lead the Lutes.

Kaaren Hatlen earned the win in the circle and was 2-for-2 with three RBIs at the plate. She limited the Loggers to just two hits and Kellie Crawford finished the game, allowing just two hits as well.

The Loggers threatened in the fourth when Shannon Reed drew a walk and Lisa Colombo singled to put two runners on but both were stranded there when the inning ended.

The Loggers and Lutes will square off again tomorrow but will switch venues with a 3 p.m. doubleheader scheduled to be played at Puget Sound.
