Loggers fall to top-seeded Linfield

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Wash.—The Puget Sound softball squad ran into Northwest Conference leader Linfield Monday, falling in both games of a doubleheader at a sunny Logger Field on the Puget Sound campus in Tacoma, Wash.

Game 1: Linfield 14, Puget Sound 0

Game one of the doubleheader started out scoreless with no hits for either team in the first inning. Linfield took the lead in the top of the second after Mckenna Spieth hit a three run home run. The next two Wildcats reached base, but the Loggers made their way out of the inning when Megan Campbell got Katy Brosig to ground into a fielder's choice.

Linfield tallied another run in the bottom of the third, and they blew the game open by scoring 10 runs in the top of the fourth inning. Brosig tallied two RBI doubles in the frame, bringing in one runner with each hit.

The Loggers had a series of chances in the top of the fourth and fifth, but were unable to capitalize. In the fifth inning, Olivia Turner reached first with two outs thanks to a Linfield error, and Taylor Jones moved Turner to third with a single. The game ended on the next play, however, a strikeout by Kristi Nagamine.

In the circle, Campbell struck out four Wildcats, her second-highest strikeout total on the season. She also tallied one hit at the plate while Jones led the squad with two hits in game one.

Game 2: Linfield 8, Puget Sound 0

The Wildcats took an early lead in game two, collecting a 1-0 advantage on two hits in the top of the first. They then added two more runs in the second after a series of doubles from Spieth and Grace Middlestadt.

Linfield scored three in the next frame, netting two of those on a dropped sacrifice fly to right by Ashley Garcia. The visitors wrapped up the game's scoring in the fourth inning, plating two to take an 8-0 advantage.

Puget Sound had three hits in the game two, those three coming from Nagamine, Jenica Holt, and Marissa Jeffers. Both Holt and Jeffers tallied singles in the fifth inning while Nagamine's one-bagger came in the fourth.

Pitcher Jaci Young had three strikeouts in the circle.

The Loggers (2-22, 1-17 NWC) remain at home for the next two games, a doubleheader against Lewis & Clark scheduled for Wednesday, April 2. First pitch in those two games is at 1:00 p.m. The contests between the Pioneers and the Loggers will make up a March 2 rainout that washed away half the season series between the two clubs.
