Box Score 2 TUCSON, Arizona – Marissa Jeffers' single in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed two runners to score as the Puget Sound softball team beat Denison, 2-1, on Thursday afternoon. The Loggers (3-17) lost to Central (Iowa), 7-3, earlier in the day. Puget Sound is now 2-2 during its six-game stay in Tucson, Arizona.
Puget Sound 2, Denison 1
Logger starting pitcher Jaci Young yielded just one run through seven innings as Puget Sound needed late heroics to pick up its third win of the season. Denison grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Loggers struck for a pair of runs in the sixth.
Erica Gott (1-for-2, 2B, R) led off the inning with a double, and Lisa Colombo (0-for-1) moved her to third with a sac bunt. Kristi Nagamine (0-for-3, R) reached base and promptly stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Jeffers. The senior smacked a single to center field to score Gott, and Nagamine came around to score the game-winning run after the centerfielder bobbled the ball.
Puget Sound 3, Central 7
Central grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the Loggers got one back in the top of the second when Jeffers scored Nagamine with a squeeze bunt. Central came back with one more in home half of the second and three in the third to take a 6-1 lead.
An RBI double by Hailey Gray in the fifth inning and another run-scoring double by Lisa Colombo in the seventh accounted for the Loggers' two other runs.
Puget Sound concludes its spring trip on Friday, March 20, with games against Dickinson (12:30 p.m.) and St. Joseph's-Brooklyn (2:30 p.m.).
