Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – Jessica Gott and Jaci Young turned in solid performances in the circle for the Puget Sound softball team, but the Loggers lost both games of a doubleheader against Whitworth on Sunday.
Puget Sound 0, Whitworth 9 (6 inn.)
Gott, a freshman, made her first-career start as a pitcher. Despite allowing four runs in the first inning, Gott pitched all six innings and allowed only three earned runs.
Paige Schaffer's (1-for-2) leadoff single in the fifth inning was the Loggers' first hit of the game, and she moved into scoring position following Marissa Jeffers' (0-for-1) sac bunt. Bailee Larson (1-for-2) followed with a single to left field, and Schaffer tried to score but was thrown out on close play at the plate.
Young (1-for-3) and Lisa Colombo (1-for-3) hit consecutive two-out singles in the sixth inning, but they were both left stranded on base.
Puget Sound 1, Whitworth 6
Young tossed her sixth complete game of the season, but the Logger committed three crucial errors that led to runs for the Pirates.
Whitworth took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Puget Sound got a run back in the second frame. Jessica Shaw (2-for-3, R) hit a one-out single and Erica Gott (1-for-3, 2B) followed with double to centerfield. Amelia Rice (0-for-1, RBI) lifted a fly ball to left field, and Shaw tagged up at third base and scored to cut the Whitworth lead to 2-1. However, the Pirates scored two runs in the third and two more in the sixth to seal the win.
The Loggers hit the road on Friday, April 3, for a doubleheader at Linfield. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
