Four Loggers record RBI, Puget Sound drops two to Pirates

SPOKANE, Washington – The Puget Sound softball team fell in a doubleheader to Whitworth on Saturday afternoon. The Loggers fell, 9-2, in the first game, before dropping a 7-4 decision.

Kristi Nagamine, Erica Gott, Jessica Gott, Kaitlyn Webster, and Jessica Shimoda all recorded runs batted in for the Loggers (11-16, 4-12 NWC).

Whitworth 9, Puget Sound 2

The Pirates (25-5, 16-2) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Loggers responded, scoring two runs of their own in the top of the second. Kristi Nagamine recorded a run batted in in the inning. Whitworth tied the game, 2-2, in the third inning, and the two teams remained even until the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Pirates took control of the game, scoring seven runs on four hits, while taking advantage of two Logger errors. Puget Sound got a runner on base in both the sixth and seventh innings, but were unable to bring any runs across, and ultimately fell.  

Erica Gott (5-6) took the loss for the Loggers, allowing seven runs in 4.1 innings. Jessica Gott threw the final 1.2 innings, giving up two runs (one earned).      

Whitworth 7, Puget Sound 4

The Loggers took the lead in the second game, going up 1-0 in the second inning on a Jessica Shimoda RBI groundout. Jessica Gott scored on the play. Whitworth, however, responded in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead.

In the fourth the Pirates scored four runs to extend their lead to 7-1. The Loggers got two runs back in the top of the fifth on RBI by Jessica Gott and Kaitlyn Webster. Puget Sound got one more run in the sixth on an Erica Gott RBI triple, and closed the gap to 7-4, but were unable to get any closer.

Jaci Young (4-6) started in the circle and took the loss. She gave up six runs in 3.2 innings while striking out two. Kasey Stern threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing one run.

The Loggers will play another doubleheader at Whitworth on Sunday, April 2. The first game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
