Young hits 3-run homer to cap 6-run inning, Loggers drop two

SPOKANE, Washington – Jaci Young hit a three-run home run, but the Puget Sound softball team fell in a doubleheader to Whitworth on Sunday afternoon. The Loggers fell, 10-0, in five innings, before getting walked off, 7-6, in the second game.

Young led the way for the Loggers (11-18, 4-14 NWC). The senior recorded three runs batted in with a home run. Erica Gott (1-for-5) had two RBI, and Jessica Gott (1-for-5) had one run batted in. Kristi Nagamine finished the day 3-for-5.

Whitworth 10, Puget Sound 0 (5 innings)

The Pirates (27-5, 18-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Puget Sound had three runners reach base in the top of the second, but were unable to bring anyone around to score. Whitworth then used an eight-run second inning to take control of the game. The Pirates added one run in the fourth inning, to extend the lead to 10-0.

Erica Gott (5-7) took the loss for the Loggers, allowing six runs in 1.2 innings, while striking out one. Jessica Gott threw the final 2.1 innings, allowing four runs, and striking out one.       

Whitworth 7, Puget Sound 6

The two teams played a scoreless first inning, but the Pirates took a 1-0 lead in bottom of the second inning. Both teams were held off the scoreboard until the fifth inning, when Whitworth scored two runs.

In the top of the seventh inning, Jessica Gott led off the inning with a walk. Haley Gray followed that up with a double. After a line out, Jaci Young came to the plate and blasted her fourth home run of the year to tie the game, 3-3. Kristi Nagamine, Amber Popovich, and Jenna Llamas each singled to load up the bases. Erica Gott doubled to center field to give the Loggers a 5-3 lead, and Jessica Gott followed it up with an RBI single of her own.

In the bottom of the seventh, the NWC-leading Pirates scored four runs to earn a walk-off victory and sweep the four-games series from the Loggers.

Jaci Young (4-7) started in the circle and took the loss. She gave up seven runs in 6.1 innings pitched. The senior struck out three batters.

The Loggers will next travel to Pacific to play a pair of make-up games. Puget Sound will first take on Lewis & Clark at 4 p.m. in a neutral site game, before playing Pacific, at 6 p.m.
