DeGuzman totals four hits against Pirates

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TACOMA, Washington – The Puget Sound softball team was unphased by a rough first inning, but the Loggers were unable to complete a comeback at home against Whitworth, 6-3, in the first game of a Northwest Conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon. Whitworth won the second game, 8-0.

The Pirates (14-3, 10-0 NWC) scored five runs in the first inning of the first game, and Whitworth's pitching held the Loggers (2-18, 0-10 NWC) hitless through four innings.

Maddie Colombo broke up the no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth. The Loggers were not going to settle with the one base hit, and Puget Sound rallied for three runs in the seventh inning.

Kelsie Sullivan got the rally started by drawing a walk, and Abby Brondos was hit by a pitch. Kaitlyn Webster blooped a single to left field that scored Sullivan, and the throw home allowed the Loggers to put two runners in scoring position.

Hana DeGuzman took advantage of the opportunity and smoked a two-run single up the middle.

DeGuzman went 2-for-4 at the plate in the first game, and she was 2-for-3 in the second game.

The Loggers and Pirates have one more doubleheader Sunday, March 17, at 12 p.m.
