Men's basketball heads to Walla Walla for two games against Whitman

TACOMA, Washington – Puget Sound men's basketball looked like a young team during its season-opening weekend at home against Whitworth (Jan. 22-23), but the Loggers are poised to bounce back with a couple of Northwest Conference games at Whitman this weekend (Jan. 29-30).

The Loggers began the 2020-21 season with a couple of losses against the Pirates. Puget Sound, which does not have a senior on the team, allowed 85 points per game and scored 63 in each contest. Whitworth was forced into 29 total turnovers during the weekend, while Puget Sound committed 32 miscues.

Puget Sound was outstanding at the free-throw line, connecting on 30 of its 36 attempts (83.3-percent) between the two games. Cal Hansen nearly recorded a double-double in the second game against Whitworth, finishing with 19 points and nine boards. Tyrese Yussuf-Willis led the Loggers in scoring in the first game with 15 points.

Whitman began its 2020-21 season with a couple of losses at Pacific Lutheran (Jan. 22-23). Walter Lum averaged 17.5 points against the Lutes, and Xzavier Lino finished with an average of 7.0 rebounds. The Blues allowed 74.0 points per game.

Puget Sound enters the weekend with 13 consecutive losses against Whitman. The last time the Loggers beat the Blues was in the NWC Semifinals, Feb. 2014.

Following this weekend, the Loggers return to Memorial Fieldhouse to house Pacific Lutheran, Feb. 5-6.
