Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – Three Loggers combined to crush four home runs, but the Puget Sound softball team lost both ends of a Northwest Conference doubleheader against Whitworth in the first home games of the season Saturday.
Puget Sound 6, Whitworth 11
The Pirates jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one-and-a-half innings, but the Loggers refused to go away. Puget Sound got on the board in the bottom of the second when Kelsie Sullivan and Abbi Wong hit consecutive doubles.
One inning later, freshman Mikayla Launched her first-career home run – a solo shot - to straight away center field. In the bottom of the fifth inning, sophomore Savanna Smith belted her first-career homer – a two-run job.
Smith also provided an RBI single in the seventh inning. She finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI. Newman went 2-for-3 and scored two runs.
Noelle Kerr worked 4.1 innings in relief, and allowed only one run.
Puget Sound 4, Whitworth 7
Mikayla Newman wasn't settling for just one home on the day. In the third inning she smacked another solo home run, this time to give Puget Sound a 1-0 lead. Later in the inning, Smith hit a sac fly that allowed Hana DeGuzman to score.
However, Whitworth scored four unanswered runs to take a 4-2 lead.
In the sixth inning, junior Kelsie Sullivan belted her first-career home run to centerfield. It brought the Loggers to within 4-3, but the Pirates plated three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
DeGuzman went 3-for-4 at the dish, while Sullivan and Newman both collected a couple of hits.
The Loggers and Pirates have one more doubleheader scheduled for Sunday, March 21, starting at 11 a.m.
