Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – Three Loggers homered, including a grand slam by Savanna Smith, as the Puget Sound split a doubleheader against Whitworth at Logger Field Sunday afternoon.
Puget Sound 10, Whitworth 8
The Loggers entered the sixth inning in an 8-3 deficit, but Puget Sound rallied for seven runs in the frame to stun the Pirates.
The rally began with Kelsie Sullivan, Kaitlyn Webster, and Jacquie Clark drawing consecutive walks. Hana DeGuzman followed with an RBI single, and Hailee Ueyama reached base on an error that allowed Webster to score.
Mikayla Newman kept the rally going with an infield RBI single, and then Smith came in to pinch hit. The Logger sophomore delivered a towering grand slam that gave Puget Sound a 10-8 lead.
Kendall Gantz earned the win by pitching two shutout innings in relief.
New Finished the game 2-for-4 with three RBI. She hit a two-run home run in the first inning – her third home run of the weekend.
Puget Sound 4, Whitworth 7
The Pirates jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but the Loggers made it a one-run game in the second. The Loggers loaded the bases after Savanna Smith walked, Kelsie Sullivan doubled, and Kaitlyn Webster also walked.
Lauren Rice and Hana DeGuzman both earned RBIs by drawing bases-loaded walk, and Hailee Ueyama hit a single that plated Abbi Wong.
Wong tied the game, 4-4, in the the third inning with a double that allowed Smith to touch home. Wong wasn't done there. In the seventh inning, the Logger catcher blasted a solo home run over the left-field fence.
Wong finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI. Mikayla Newman and Ueyama both went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Loggers are on the road next week for four games at Willamette, March 27-28.
