Box Score 2 TACOMA, Washington – Savanna Smith homered twice and Hana DeGuzman walked it off as the Puget Sound softball team stunned No. 1 Linfield, 7-6, Friday afternoon. The Wildcats are the top-ranked team in all of NCAA D-III, according to the most recent National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll.
Friday was the Logger program's first win over Linfield since March 2006.
The Wildcats held a 6-0 through four-and-a-half innings, but the Loggers rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth.
After Hailee Ueyama hit a one-out single, she came around to score from first base on a double hit to left field by Noelle Kerr. Smith then stepped to the plate and belted a two-run shot to cut the Wildcats' lead in half.
Later in the inning, Kelsie Sullivan smacked a double to right field, and Abbi Wong drove her in with a single.
The score remained 6-4 in favor of Linfield entering the bottom of the seventh inning. Smith led off the home half of the stanza with a solo home run to left field – her fourth homer of the year.
Linfield retired the next two Loggers, but Wong kept the game alive by drawing a walk. Jessica Moore also drew a free pass, and Hope Fleischman was hit by a pitch to load the bases for DeGuzman.
The Logger left fielder lifted a shallow fly ball to left field that landed safely. Wong came in to score the game-tying run, and Moore sprinted home for the game-winning run on the play.
Kendall Gantz earned her first victory of the season by throwing three shutout innings in relief of Maddy Garcia. Gantz struckout four and allowed just one hit.
Linfield won the first game of Friday's doubleheader, 6-1.
