Comeback bid falls short at Willamette

Box Score

SALEM, Oregon – Three Loggers scored three goals each as the Puget Sound lacrosse team nearly overcame a seven-goal deficit, but the Loggers lost the 2021 season finale at Willamette, 13-11, Sunday afternoon.

The Bearcats raced out to a 7-0 lead 16 minutes into the game. Hayden Hotchkiss finally put the Loggers on the board with 12:30 left in the opening half. Emily LaRiviere scored her first of three goals with 5:30 left in the half, and seconds later Bee Bridge scored her first of three.

Abby Stranahan, who also scored three times, netted her first goal with less than a minute left in the half, but the Loggers still trailed, 10-4, at the break.

The Loggers opened the second half with renewed energy, and they opened the period with a 4-1 run. LaRiviere got the offense going with a goal less than two minutes into the second half. The Bearcats answered back, but then Bridge, Isabel Riser, and Stranahan scored three consecutive goals in an eight-minute span.

All of a sudden the Loggers trailed by only three, 11-8.

However, Willamette had an answer just two more times, and that was all it needed to hang on. Stranahan scored the game's final goal with less than 30 seconds left in regulation.

The Loggers dominated draw controls, 18-8, with Hotchkiss winning seven.
