Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – The University of Puget Sound lacrosse team pushed its winning streak to three with a 15-10 win over Fontbonne on Monday. The Loggers (3-4) outscored the Griffins (2-5) 7-3 in the second half after a tight battle in the first half.
After starting the season 0-4, the Loggers have now won three consecutive matches at home. Over the past two matches, the Loggers have also posted strong second halves to ward off their opponents.
"This season we brought in a young group and we definitely took some time to come together," said head coach Liana Halstead. "Our road trip was a good learning experience for us. We learned a lot about ourselves as a team and then we brought it home."
The Loggers have truly enjoyed playing in front of their home crowd with at least 12 goals in each of their last three matches.
After Marissa Williams put the Griffins up 1-0 early in the match, Jessica McDonald drew the Loggers with a goal at the 23:02 mark. Just 21 seconds later, Julia Schulman scored the first of her game-high five goals to put the Loggers up 2-1 and they never trailed the rest of the way.
Kristine Morris later put the Loggers up 6-3 but the Griffins rattled off three straight goals over the next seven minutes to tie the game at 6-6. Mary Alice Price scored the first of her team-high four goals to tie the game.
Anna Gunderson and Katherine Havlik answered back with a pair of goals for the Loggers before Price struck again just before halftime, giving the Loggers a slim 8-7 lead.
Once again, the second half belonged to the home team as the Griffins were held scoreless for the next 11:28 as the Loggers opened up a commanding 13-7 lead. Gunderson's second goal gave the Loggers their biggest lead at 13-7 when she stopped on a dime in front of the net and beat the keeper with a blind, backhand fling.
The Griffins managed to do some damage late in the half but couldn't close the gap as the Loggers held on for a 15-10 win.
The Loggers continue their homestand with a matchup with North Central on Thursday at 6 p.m. on Lower Baker.
