Loggers get back to winning ways with rout at George Fox

NEWBERG, Ore.—The Puget Sound lacrosse squad snapped a three-game losing streak in a big way Saturday, taking down George Fox 14-3 at Austin Sports Complex in Newberg, Ore.

The Bruins scored the game's first goal, finding the net just 26 seconds into the match. Midfielder Caroline Cook led the Loggers' response, however, scoring the next three goals to give Puget Sound a permanent advantage. After Cook's three, Kerri Smith netted one with 15:46 remaining in the first half for a 4-1 lead to the visitors.

Less than one minute after Smith's score George Fox got one back, but the Loggers finished the half by scoring the final two goals. Cook scored her fourth of the year off a free position shot with a player advantage, and then she netted her fifth of the contest with 1:26 left in the half. Olivia Keene, the Loggers' leading scorer entering the contest scored her first of the game with 48 seconds left in the first half to give the Loggers a 7-2 advantage going into the break.

Coming out of the half, Smith got the Loggers back on the board with a free position shot with nearly two minutes gone in the period. Keene got back into the action with less than five minutes gone in the half, and Callie Holgate netted her first of the contest and fourth of the season with 21:04 showing on the clock.

Smith scored the next two goals, finding the back of the cage twice within 24 seconds. Cook scored her sixth and final of the match with 13:16 remaining in regulation, and Anna Richmond finished the Loggers' scoring summary with her first goal of the season with less than two and a half minutes left in the contest. George Fox scored with 12 seconds left to bring the score to 14-3, the final score between the two squads.

Cook led all players with six goals on seven shots. Defensively, Holgate picked up five ground balls while Keene, Cook, and Elena Becker all picked up three ground balls apiece. Cook, Holgate, and Hailey Shoemaker all caused two turnovers, leading the squad in the category.

In goal, Madison Paskett picked up her first win of the season, making saves on four of 11 shots in 60 minutes of action. For the Bruins, Kaylee Kolin took the loss to fall to 2-3.

Puget Sound (4-3) has a couple days of rest before its next game, a contest against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Monday, March 17. First draw for that game is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on Lower Baker Field in Tacoma, Wash.
